Grant Objective

Advances made in genomic, cellular, and bioinformatic tools offer a unique opportunity to improve the detection, early diagnosis, and treatment of patients with Primary Immunodeficiency.

The objective of the Immunodeficiency Canada Research Fellowship in Primary Immunodeficiency supported by Takeda Canada is to support early career level investigators (PhD or MD/PhD) doing laboratory research-based investigation in mechanisms or systems underlying the pathogenesis of Primary Immunodeficiency.

The study must fall within the scope of Diagnosis and Treatment of Primary Immunodeficiency, under the categories of:

  • Genetics of Primary Immunodeficiency, and/or
  • Characterization of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying Primary Immunodeficiency, and/or
  • Advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of Primary Immunodeficiency

Value and Duration of the Award

The value of the Award is $60,000 CAD/year, for a duration of 2 years. Fellowships should commence within six (6) months of receiving the Award.

Eligibility

The Applicant must:

  • Hold a doctorate-level degree, entering (or currently undertaking) a full-time research-based fellowship (PhD or MD/PhD) or a combined research and clinical fellowship (MD/PhD), AND
  • Be early-career level, within the first five years of completing their PhD, or, within three years of finishing subspecialty training for MD (or equivalent), after adjustments made for career interruptions*, if applicable
  • Be well-versed in wet laboratory techniques (such as PCR, western blotting, flow cytometry, etc.)

The Supervisor must:

  • Have an MD (or equivalent) degree, with track record of excellence in all aspects of managing Primary Immunodeficiencies, including diagnosis (SCID newborn screening) and treatment (BMT, gene therapy, other), as well as a reputable research program in the field.

There is no restriction on the Applicant’s current residence, however, the Award must be held at a Canadian university or research institute defined as an eligible institution by CIHR

At the discretion of Immunodeficiency Canada, an extension to delay the commencement of the Award beyond 6 months may be requested to ensure eligibility of the Applicant to work in Canada.

The Supervisor must hold an academic appointment in the same University or Institute.

The study must fall within the categories of:

  • Genetics of Primary Immunodeficiency, and/or
  • Characterization of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying Primary Immunodeficiency, and/or
  • Advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of Primary Immunodeficiency

Investigator-initiated studies of non-commercial and commercial pharmaceutical products eligible for industry sponsorship will not be considered except under special circumstances.

*Career interruptions include: parental leave, illness, health-related family responsibilities, mandatory military service, disruptions due to war, civil conflicts and/or natural disasters in the country of residence.

Evaluation

  • Quality and clarity of the proposed Research Project and the potential to increase research capacity related to Primary Immunodeficiency
  • Scientific strengths of the proposed methodology
  • Demonstrated ability of Applicant/Collaborators to realistically achieve proposed project objectives
  • Appropriateness of the proposed research project to further the Applicant’s research career
  • Alignment of the proposed research with one (or more) of the three defined study categories
  • Strength of Applicant’s CV
  • Strength of Supervisor’s Letter of Support
  • Strength of the proposed Learning Environment

Conditions of Funding

  • Funding can be used for salary support or research-related expenses
  • No Institutional overhead fees can be deducted from the award
  • A final report on the results of the research project must be submitted no later than six (6) months after completion of the research project
  • Awardee must acknowledge the assistance given by Immunodeficiency Canada and Takeda Canada in any publication or presentation made during the tenure of (or resulting from the tenure of) the Award
  • Awardees are required to notify Immunodeficiency Canada immediately of any and all additional awards received during the tenure of the Award.  
  • For applicants with an MD (or MD/PhD), those with matching funds or combined funding from other sources will also be considered eligible for this award.

Termination of the Award

This Award may be terminated at any time with 30 days written notice for good and sufficient reason by the Awardee, the host University/Institution or Immunodeficiency Canada. If terminated, all unspent funds as at the termination date, must be returned immediately to Immunodeficiency Canada.

CAAIF-Immunodeficiency Canada Research Fellowship/Early Career Investigator Award in Primary Immunodeficiency

Call for Research Proposals

The objective of this award is to support early career investigators doing research into advancing the understanding of molecular and genetic basis of primary immunodeficiency as well as breakthroughs in novel treatments for these conditions.

There is one award available for a minimum of $20,000.

Call for Research Proposals

Eligibility and requirements

  • The award is specifically for residents or young investigators who are studying in allergy and clinical immunology (preference will be given to Canadian based researchers)
  • The award is specifically for residents or young investigators who are studying in allergy and clinical immunology (preference will be given to Canadian based researchers)
  • The research project must have clinical relevance.
  • The research can be in progress.
  • The research must have received Institutional ethics approval.

Value of Award

The award will pay research expenses up to $15,000.

Duration of Grant Support

The duration of support will be for one to two years.

Publications

Award Recipient shall acknowledge the support by using the full name of the award in any publication or presentation made during or resulting from the tenure of the award.

Termination of the Award

The Award Recipient, the Institution and/or Immunodeficiency Canada may terminate the Award at any time for good and sufficient reason.

Research Review Criteria

Full applications will be assessed and ranked on:

  • Clinical relevance
  • Originality of research
  • Quality of the proposal
  • Ability to conduct the research
  • Appropriateness of facilities
